Dimonis d'Albopas - Dimonis d'Albopàs (previously advertised as Dimonis de Mallorca), was created in 1997 in the town of Sa Pobla, Mallorca, and will for this special SummerStage event incorporate the collaboration of musicians and dancers from other parts of the island. The regular group, which features 24 dimonis and 14 drummers, has appeared in Ibiza, Barcelona, London, Cologne, and many towns in Mallorca. The parade of the Dimonis de Mallorca originated in an ancient pagan rite and evolved from the 14th century religious parade of Corpus. This colorful ceremony, in which devil masks are worn by the participants, has become an important reminder of a rich cultural past. Essentially, the parade harks back to elaborate harvest festival rites in which symbolic fire was used to purify the land and protect the harvest and livestock; the dimonis oversaw the ritual, maintaining an ancient connection to the earth. When Christianity arrived in Mallorca, pagan divinities were adapted to Christian characters, and the dimonis came to represent the bad spirits. The dimonis dance and chase people during the celebrations and are usually followed by musicians performing on the xeremia (bagpipe) and flabiol, a whistle that is played one-handed with a small drum under the elbow. Today dimonis are popular figures that are no longer attached just to the religious tradition.Presented in collaboration with the Center for Traditional Music & Dance and World Music Institute with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Heritage and Preservation, and L'Institut d'Estudis Baleàrics.
